In Morocco, particularly in the Marrakech region, a lemon variety called “Marrakech Lime” is grown. It is also known by other names, such as “citro beldi” or “hamd beldi,” meaning “traditional lemon.”  The fruit is medium-sized, yellow, and tart when ripe.

History of Lemon Essential Oil

Lemon essential oil is obtained by cold-pressing the lemon peel of lemon fruit. The peels of lemons are the most nutrient-dense part found in them.

The origin of the lemon trees is unknown. However, it is believed that they are native to Asia and first grew to India.  Historically, lemon trees were used to treat infectious diseases not only by ancient Indians but also by Egyptians and Romans. It is believed that lemon trees were introduced to Europe during the Middle Ages around 200 AD. They eventually made their way from the Middle East to North Africa, and Christopher Columbus brought them to America.

They were also often used by English sailors in the Royal Navy during this period to prevent scurvy and vitamin deficiencies due to their antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

The word Lemon is derived from either the Arabic name “laimun,” or the Persian name “limu,” or the Ottoman Turkish word “limun,” all of which means “citrus fruit.”
