The Argan tree: Amazigh “Tree of Life.”

The argan (Argania spinosa) tree grows naturally in and around Morocco. Its existence goes back thousands of years despite the arid climate because of its capability to withstand extreme temperatures. It is a resilient tree that plays a vital role in preserving biodiversity.

During May and June, the argan tree bears fruits. Inside the fruit, beneath is a seed that resembles an almond– the rich and extraordinary oil source.

Empowering Women

Argan oil has become a highly desirable oil, and demand has skyrocketed for cosmetics worldwide. The global market for argan oil has led to an increasing number of cooperatives being established in rural Morocco to produce the oil. The cooperatives provide an opportunity for women to earn money.  As a result, families can pay for basic education and health care for their children and literacy programs for adults.

production of cosmetic pure argan oil

The ethnic Amazigh women were the first to extract argan oil from the fruits of the argan tree – for cosmetics and culinary use. Culinary oils are made by roasting nuts and then grinding them into a paste, while cosmetic argan oil is made from unroasted kernels. The color difference can be seen in the culinary oil, slightly darker depending on how well it was roasted.

Cosmetic Pure Argan Oil is known for its unique, raw aroma since it comes from the seed/kernel inside the Argan nut, and when applied to the skin, it spreads very quickly and is absorbed immediately, and the scent will disappear. The texture is smooth and silky, not dark, sticky, slimy, or watery. It has a golden yellow color, so it has been named “Morocco’s Liquid Gold.”

Traditionally, producing this luxurious oil begins with collecting the mature argan fruit that falls to the ground. Amazigh women meticulously hand-pick and select mature fruit to produce the best quality oil.  It is then sun-dried before peeling and de-pulping by hand to remove the outer layers. The argan nuts must be cracked to retrieve the oil-rich kernel inside.  The next step is grinding, and the kernels are crushed and ground using a handmade mill which usually takes two hours to grind one liter—lastly, kneading the paste to extract the oil. Argan oil is produced with a lot of effort. One woman would require approximately 24 hours to produce one liter of argan oil. One liter of argan oil requires around 40 kilograms of fruit or about 2 kilograms of kernels.

With the popularity of argan oil outside of Morocco, production has changed a little, like pressing the oil and grinding nuts are now handled by machines. This result is a fast-absorbing oil that possesses excellent preservation qualities. However, the pounding of the hard outer shell of the kernels is done by hand before machines can press the inner kernels to obtain the oil.
