A Historical Note
It is believed that the verbena plant (Aloysia citrodora) is native to South America, specifically Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. By the 17th century, Spanish explorers had brought Lemon Verbena to Europe, where it became widely planted.
The plant was renamed Aloysia citriodora by the Spanish physicians Casimiro Gomez Ortega and Antonio Paulau y Verdera. It was named after Maria Luisa Teresa de Parma (1751-1819), the wife of King Carlos IV and Queen of Spain. Citrus Verbena was popularly called ‘yerba Luisa’ in Spain and ‘Lucia-Lima’ in Portugal. The plant is also known as Lippia citrodora and Verbena citrodora.
