Sweet Orange Essential Oil

Extraction of Sweet Orange Essential Oil

Essential oils are produced from either the rind or the steam distilled juice of the fruit. In comparison with cold-pressed oil, steam distillation produces an oil with a different aroma.

The extraction method is an essential factor to consider when buying sweet orange oil. When applied to the skin, cold-pressed oils smell better, and distilled oils can increase photosensitivity. A dilution level of the oil is also essential to observe. Sweet Orange Oil cannot be applied directly to the skin without diluting a carrier oil or cream.

Cold pressing preserves the antioxidant properties of sweet orange peels. Peels are ground first before being pressed. The pressing process produces a liquid that combines orange juice and essential oils. After the essential oil separates from the juice, it is collected by centrifugation.
